Confession

O Lord, please forgive me.
Have mercy on me and don’t harm me.
Don’t consider me according to my failures.
I feel dirty for what I’ve done, Lord.
Please take my guilt away.
I know I have done wrong.
Though I have hurt other people by my sin,
I realize that I have sinned against you.
I have broken your laws.
My sin haunts me everywhere I go, everywhere I turn.
You have the right to punish me in any way that you please.
I deserve it.
(Psalm 51:1-4, a paraphrase)

Lord, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you. (Psalm 130:3-4)

God does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities
For as high as the heavens are above the earth
so great is his love for those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far as he removed our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him,
for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.
(Psalm 103:10-14)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and purify us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:9)

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. He has not dealt wit us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103.8,10-12)

Repent! Turn away from all your offenses;
then sin will not be your downfall.
Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed,
and get a new heart and a new spirit. Ezekiel 18:30-31 (The Message)

So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding…. (Ephesians. 1:6-8, NLT)

Lord, I confess that I have taken my eyes off of You. I have looked to people, places and things for my happiness. I have ignored your Word and failed to listen to your voice. I have become enslaved by my sin – justifying myself, making excuses, blaming others, and sometimes delighting in my rebellion. I so often choose to do what is right in my own eyes, without even thinking about Your will for me. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Help me to turn away from anything and everything that keeps me from loving and obeying you they way that I should. I turn to You, my Savior, who died for me. Forgive me. Cleanse me. Change me by the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

***

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent, for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer)

***

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image, through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

O Lord, please forgive me.
Have mercy on me and don’t harm me.
Don’t consider me according to my failures.
Lord, if you kept a record of our sins,

who could ever survive?

But you offer forgiveness,
that I might learn to fear you.
I feel dirty for what I’ve done, Lord.
Please take my guilt away.
I know I have done wrong.
Though I have hurt other people by my sin,
I realize that I have sinned against you.
I have broken your laws.
My sin haunts us everywhere I go,
everywhere I turn.
You have the right to punish me
in any way that you please.
I deserve it.
How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?

Cleanse me from these hidden faults.

Keep me from deliberate sins!

Don’t let them control me.

If I confess my sins,You are faithful and just
to forgive my sinand cleanse me from all unrighteousness.
You demonstrated your own love for me in this:
while I was still a sinner, Christ died for me.
Though I deserved death, you took my place.
You have given me the gift of eternal life.
So I praise You, oh God, for the glorious grace
You have poured out on me.
You are so rich in kindness and grace
that You purchased my freedomwith the blood of Your Son,
You cleanse my conscience
So that I might serve the living God!

My life is a mess. I am powerless to fix it.
But God, you are all-powerful. You alone can take this mess and make sense of my life.
I admit that I’ve tried to care for myself and I can’t do it.
I surrender my will and my life to You.
I want You to take care of me from now on.
I have been rebellions against you, God.
I have hurt the people who love me.
I have encouraged others to join me in my rebellion against you.
My list of sins is long. I’m finally willing to have You point each one out to me.
But I’m trusting to you to wash them all away by the precious blood of Jesus
and clean up my heart.
You alone can set me free from the burdens that weigh me down
and the things that stress me out.
I’m asking you, God, to make things right in my life and in my relationships.
Help me, God, to listen to You from now on.
Help me to listen to Your voice as I read Your Word.
Help me to listen to You, Holy Spirit, whenever You speak to my conscience.
From now on, I only want Your will for my life.
Help me to fix my eyes on You.
Give me the wisdom, courage, faith, strength and direction to obey and follow wherever You lead me.
I give up. I surrender. And I put my trust in You alone.
Amen.
